Demosthenes Kokkinidis (October 12, 1929 – February 4, 2020) was a Greek painter, sculptor, professor, and former rector (1979-1982) of the Athens School of Fine Arts (ASFA). In his early solo exhibitions (1961, "Kleio," Hydra, and 1964, "Merlin," Athens), he presented a painting style with abstract elements and themes inspired by life in the working-class neighborhoods and the islands. Soon after, he turned to a more politically charged subject matter, reflecting the tense atmosphere of the era. The works from this period, some of which were exhibited much later, lacked realistic representation but featured violent color contrasts and strong Expressionist elements. From the 1980s onwards, Kokkinidis' work moved away from direct political references, and his painting shifted towards personal experiences, with themes centered around nature and human communication. Later, he delved into exploring the timeless elements that connect the present with the mythic past, with works primarily inspired by Homer's "Odyssey."
