Oil painting on canvas by N. Samartzidis
Dimensions: 37 cm length, 21 cm height
Nikos Samartzidis was born in 1957 in Aridaia, Pella, Macedonia, but he grew up in Athens and later in Thessaloniki, where he spent his youth. Even as a student, he devoted his free time to painting. He graduated in 1975. From 1975 to 1976, he took lessons in freehand and linear drawing. In 1977, he participated in and experimented at the small free art workshop of G. Spanoudakis in Thessaloniki. In search of identity, he traveled for three years in Crete (1979-82) and came into contact with the island landscape of the Aegean, which captivated him so much that he remained there, although he often had to work as a farm laborer. From 1982 to 1986, he professionally engaged in ceramics in Thessaloniki. However, his inclination for "returning to nature" and nostalgia for the countryside and the sea led him to move his workshop to the beautiful "Horto" of picturesque Pelion (1987). At the same time, he painted using Indian ink, tempera, and acrylics. His subjects, Greek landscapes, islands, and the sea, usually emerge through a serene evening light. Since 1990, he has lived in Germany. The distance from his homeland has had a catalytic effect on his art. Thus, after a late interest in ancient Greek vase painting and Byzantine art, he continues his exploration, investigating the possibilities and limits of contemporary artistic movements. In recent years, he has studied ancient Greek script as a visual phenomenon, specifically the Cretan-Mycenaean "Linear B." He is a member of the artists' association "MALKASTEN" in the city of Rüsselsheim.
