A pile of man-made collectible items, which have embellished homes, and various spaces. Objects of desire that were cherished, loved, and ultimately left to gather dust in old boxes .. all which hold untold stories and uncover hidden secrets from a bygone time.
Our history begins approximately 80 years ago, at the point where Greece first intersects with Western Civilization. This is when our grandfather, Ioannis Gekas, who was a professional carpenter, became fascinated with the arts. Through commercial dealings with Europeans, he encountered new cultural experiences that honed his sensitivity and heightened his appreciation for precision and attention to detail. This led him to establish the first House of Antiques - Old Furniture GEKA in Patras.
His global travels and interest in antique collections, particularly in restoring and preserving antique furniture and objects, earned him swift recognition in Greece.
All of this passion was passed on to his son, Ilias Gekas, who was nurtured and grew within the Geka Antique House.The young Ilias, captivated by the world of rare objects and history, inherited his father's eye for quality and accuracy and further enhanced his knowledge with studies at the University of Florence in the history of art and the preservation and evaluation of antique furniture and objects.
Ilias rapidly expanded the ANTIQUE GEKAS brand beyond Greek borders by opening and successfully running the GALLERY GEKAS ANTIQUES in the heart of Florence for approximately 14 years. At the same time, a second branch of the GALLERY GEKAS ANTIQUES was established in Patras.
The ANTIQUES GEKAS establishment gained a reputation for its mastery, reliability, genuineness, official recognition and evaluation of authentic antiques, attracting a substantial customer base and leading to its expansion in Athens. Ilias Gekas opened the GALLERY GEKAS in Athens where he meticulously appraised and tended to each valuable item entrusted to him by clients.And here we are today where the adage "history repeats itself" holds true for Polyxeni and Ioannis, children of Ilias, who were raised in the Antique House in Athens.
A new generation has embraced the same zeal and fondness for antique furniture and objects, akin to what took place in Patra from their grandfather to their father in times gone by.
And here we are; the children of Ilias. We literally grew up in the antique house. We would spend all our free time here (or there if it was a different location), among the antique pieces. We would clean and arrange them, but most importantly, we were entranced by what we saw and heard from our father. We particularly loved making up stories for every vintage item that came into to the gallery.
We Polyxeni and Ioannis, having both graduated from the University of Florence in Art History and Antique Conservation/Restoration, and from the University of Piraeus and Doror Export in Statistics and Jewelry, are proud to continue the 80-year legacy of expertise, experience, and reliability established by Gallery Gekas Antiques. Additionally, as registered members of the Greek State of
Judicial Experts and the ‘Athens and Pireaus Courts of First Instance’, our qualifications and degrees enable us to serve the Greek legal system.
Today we are a diverse team consisting of both younger and older generations, who are knowledgeable and hold great respect and admiration for all things old.
